Print Matching Files and Prepare One Scene

Choose A4 or US Letter to match your paper. Print the cut sheets and references in the same paper format at 100% / Actual Size, with Fit and Shrink turned off. Each finished picture is 180 × 180 mm, made from nine 60 × 60 mm squares. The complete five-page pack has two mixed cut sheets, two whole-picture references and one guide. Print the complete pack or the separate files, so you do not duplicate them.

An adult trims the outside of each picture block and cuts all its shared straight grid lines. There are no tabs, interlocking edges or gaps between squares. Keep the reference pages whole. Work with one scene’s nine pieces first and leave the second sheet uncut or in its own envelope. Keep the two sets separate; both use the same square shape.

Cow and Barn Reference

A black-and-white cow stands in front of a red barn with a cross-braced door. A broad tree fills the upper middle, with red apples hanging in the upper right. Hay lies near the lower left; sunflowers, daisies and a wooden water bucket fill the lower right. The cow’s patches and the barn’s pale door braces are useful shapes to notice before spreading out the pieces. Look at the reference together and choose whether to begin with the animal, building or a distinctive corner.

Join the Cow, Barn Door and Path

The nine squares are already mixed on the cut sheet. Find the red barn roof and its small weather vane for the upper left of the rebuilt picture. The barn door continues below it, and the cow’s muzzle crosses near the right edge of that red-door area. Match the cow’s large black patches across the center before adding the lower pieces with its legs. The bucket belongs at the bottom right and hay at the bottom left. Check the stone-path lines between those corners as another way to confirm the joins.

Pig and Fence Reference

A pink pig stands on a sandy path between vegetables and flowers. A wooden gate is behind it, apple blossom branches frame the upper left and a pear tree and red cottage sit farther right. Pumpkins fill the lower left, while a round water bowl and clover sit at the lower right. A cabbage and red radishes beside the pig give the left edge a different texture from the sunflower-and-fence area on the right. Name a few of these landmarks before beginning the second set.

Follow the Pig and Wooden Rails

Look for the piece with the pig’s smiling face and compare it with the reference to orient the central row. Its pink body continues into the neighboring square on the left, and the legs extend down toward the path below. The gate’s diagonal brace and horizontal rails give clues for pieces above the animal. Put the pumpkin corner at the bottom left and the bowl-and-clover corner at the bottom right. If two earthy pieces look similar, compare the path’s hoofprints and the edge of a plant rather than choosing by brown color alone.

Rebuild, Compare and Put Away

Spread one scene’s nine pieces face up on a clear surface beside its reference. Turn the pictures upright and build a three-by-three square. You can begin with a distinctive corner or assemble part of the main object, then add its neighbors. Because every cut edge is straight, use the picture to decide where a piece belongs.

Match lines, outlines and color changes across a shared edge. If a join looks wrong, compare that area with the whole reference and try rotating or moving the square. A single matching color is only a clue. Keep the pieces gently touching so a continuous line can be checked without a gap.

For an easier start, an adult can lay out one completed row and offer the remaining pieces, or find the four corners together. The reference can stay visible throughout. After finishing, compare the complete picture, count all nine squares into their envelope and put that scene away before taking out the other one.
